Chief Minister Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) resigned just one day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scored a surprising win in the Delhi Assembly elections.

On Sunday, February 9, Atishi met with Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and handed over her resignation letter.

Afterward, Saxena decided to dissolve the seventh Delhi Legislative Assembly.

The results, which were declared on Saturday, showed that the BJP won 48 out of the 70 seats, a major leap from the 8 seats they had won in the 2020 election.

That year, AAP had dominated with 62 seats. This time, AAP could only manage 22 seats. Meanwhile, Congress, a major political player in the city, failed to win any seats at all.

Many senior AAP leaders, including national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Saurabh Bhardwaj, lost in the election. Atishi was the only one who managed to keep her seat.

After more than 26 years, BJP has returned to power in Delhi. Following the victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Delhi and congratulated party workers.

He promised that the BJP would keep its promises and focus on bringing more development to the capital.
